Witbank Municipality Faces Budget Deficit Amidst Service Delivery Protests
Witbank, Mpumalanga – The Witbank Municipality is grappling with a significant budget deficit, a situation that has exacerbated ongoing service delivery protests across the town. Residents have voiced increasing frustration over persistent power outages, unreliable water supply, and deteriorating road infrastructure, linking these failures directly to the municipality's financial woes. The deficit, estimated at R150 million for the current fiscal year, has raised serious concerns among ratepayers and local government officials alike.
Councillor Thandi Nkosi, Chairperson of the Municipal Finance Committee, acknowledged the severity of the situation in a press briefing on Tuesday. "We are facing a challenging financial period, largely due to a combination of declining revenue collection and escalating operational costs," Nkosi stated. "The municipality is actively exploring various strategies to address this deficit, including improved debt collection mechanisms and stringent cost-cutting measures. However, these processes take time, and we understand the frustrations of our community."
The impact of the budget shortfall is palpable in various Witbank communities. Ms. Emily Mokoena, a resident of Klarinet, expressed her dismay. "We pay our rates and taxes diligently, yet we are left without basic services. Our streets are riddled with potholes, and we often go days without electricity or water. It feels like our money is disappearing into a black hole," she remarked during a recent protest outside the municipal offices. Similar sentiments were echoed by Mr. Sipho Dlamini from Tasbet Park, who highlighted the economic impact of unreliable services on local businesses.
In response to the growing unrest, the municipality has initiated a series of public participation meetings to engage with residents and solicit input on potential solutions. Mayor David Masango urged for calm and cooperation. "We are committed to transparency and accountability. We understand the anger and disappointment, and we are working tirelessly to restore essential services and financial stability," Masango affirmed. He added that a comprehensive financial recovery plan is being developed, with details expected to be presented to the community in the coming weeks. The success of this plan will be crucial in mitigating the ongoing service delivery crisis and restoring public confidence in the Witbank Municipality.
